As reported in the Irrawaddy: http://www.irrawaddy.org/burma/wirathu-discuss-interfaith-marriage-restrictions-monks-conference.html

As the article explains:

‘This proposed law would require any Buddhist woman seeking to marry a Muslim man to first gain permission from her parents and local government officials. Any Muslim man who marries a Buddhist woman is required to convert to Buddhism. The monks said at the time that they would pressure lawmakers into adopting the proposal.’

  1. Not sure this represents the opinion of the Burmese Sangha as a whole, but we will see. One would hope that other voices will be heard from within the Sangha in the coming months. The 969 movement is so complex. It’s part pf this phenomenon that I am terming ‘ethnocentric Buddhism’ – not a new phenomenon but one where ones ethnicity and religion are closely linked. Wirathu embodies this sentiment in modern Burmese Buddhism.
